Adult Education

Our life of learning more of God and from each other continues on Sunday mornings during the Christian Education hour.

Classes for Fall 2023:

Lectio Divina Group: Join us on Sunday mornings from 8:30-9:15am for a time of listening deeply to the scriptures that will be explored during that morning’s worship service. We will use the lectio divina method, which involves repeated listening in a contemplative manner. This group will meet in the Upper Room (just outside the elevator on the 3rd floor). Led by Pastor Mark Rupp. Meets in the Upper Room (just outside elevator on the third floor).

The Doctrine of Discovery is based on a statement by Pope Alexander VI in 1493 claiming that Christians had the right to settle land held by people who were not Christians.  This statement continued to shape the actions of Christians in relationship to indigenous peoples for the next 600 years.  In 2015, a coalition of Mennonite organizations and individuals formed the group Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery, exploring how Christians—including Mennonites—in North America used the Doctrine to open Residential schools for Native children and to take the land of Native Americans.  We will use their study guide to shape our class and discussions. Led by Phil Hart.  Meets in rm 24 and is also available by Zoom.

A Hunger for Healing: For the past several years, this class/group has provided an introduction and/or guide to the spiritual exercises known as the 12 Steps. We read from J. Keith Miller’s book A Hunger for Healing; The Twelve Steps as a classic model for Christian spiritual growth, as well as work our way through an accompanying series of DVDs. What we read and watch provides a starting point for sharing, for discussion, and for (hopefully) growth and healing. No previous experience with the 12 Steps is required. Regular attendance is not required. Anyone is welcome. The class is currently facilitated by Julie Hart. Meets in rm 22 and is also available by Zoom.

Transitions and Ritual: This class is at capacity. We will reflect on the many transitions we undergo throughout adulthood, select a particular personal transition past or present to give attention to, and ritually mark that transition together.  This is a closed group, with a new group forming every fall.  Led by Pastor Joel Miller.  Meets Sept 10, 17, 24, Oct 8, 15 in rm 21.

Coming later this fall:

Inquirers’ Class: We will explore the basics of Christian faith in an Anabaptist/Mennonite perspective, as well as provide an overview of the story and life of Columbus Mennonite Church.  The class is open to anyone, with a special invitation to new attenders and those considering membership at CMC.  Led by Pastor Joel Miller. Meets Oct 29, Nov 12, 19 Dec 10, 17.

Leading worship or song: The Worship Commission will offer several sessions during the Sunday school hour this Fall on what is involved in leading worship or song for our services.  Come and explore your talent for leading! Worship Leaders class will meet November 12 and 19. Song leaders class will meet December 10 and 17.
