General Guidelines for Leading a Worship Service

Thank you so much for your efforts on behalf of worship at Columbus Mennonite! This congregation has long appreciated the efforts of many different worship volunteers, bringing a variety of gifts and styles to our worship.  May God bless you as you share your gifts with us!

The following time line is suggested.

  • 2-4 weeks before the service, check Edit Grid for Worship Schedule for texts and themes, names of participants, special events included in the service, etc. Read the scripture and begin preliminary planning and prayer for the service.

  • On the Sunday before the service, the Worship Leader will begin collaboration with the other participants in the service. He/She will send a proposed order of service to all participants in the service indicating the places where their input is desired. Continue the collaboration as needed.

  • By Thursday at 9 am, the Worship Leader needs to send a finalized order of worship, including hymns, to the church office for bulletin preparation. Please be sure to communicate well with the Worship Leader between Sunday and Wednesday so that he/she has all the information to meet this deadline.

  • Each Sunday morning principal participants in worship are invited to a time of prayer in the pastor’s office at 9 am. This also serves as an important face-to-face time to make sure everyone has the same understandings about responsibilities for the morning.

  • At 9:10 am, the sound person is ready for sound checks with all participants. It is important to make sure the microphones are hooked up correctly, have necessary batteries, etc.

  • The prelude begins at 9:20 am so any preparation and communication with other participants should be completed before this time.
