How to Use these Materials

Each session is divided into seven sections, with each section having its own pop-up window. To navigate, use the "Navigate," "Back," and "Next" buttons at the bottom of each window, or the arrow buttons at the top of each window.

  1. The session's objective, along with the full text of the scripture passage, using the New Revised Standard Version. If you prefer another version such as the New International, click on the links provided. By clicking on the link at the bottom of the scripture page, you may also hear the passage read by Gillian McIntosh.

  2. Orientation. An introduction to the specific aspect of 1st century Palestinian culture which this session explores.

  3. Cultural Contrasts and Comparisons. Succinct comparisons between 1st Century Palestine and 21st Century USA on selected topics. These broad generalizations (and you should read them as such) are intended to provide glimpses into how different our world is from the New Testament's world.

  4. To Consider as You Explore. Questions intended to help you think about the underlying dynamics of 1st century culture, as well as suggestions for appropriating the material into your spiritual life.

  5. Essential Resources. Links to foundational materials on the Web, written by evangelical, mainline, and Catholic scholars.

  6. Advanced Resources. Links to in-depth materials on the Web for those who want to learn more, also by a mix of evangelical, mainline, and Catholic scholars.

  7. Prayer. A concluding prayer to nourish your relationship with Christ.

Scattered throughout you will also find highlighted words. Clicking on them will open a pop-up window that defines that word or phrase.

Also explore the four tabs on the upper right hand corner:

  • The "Timeline" section helps you understand the broader sweep of ancient history that preceded the New Testament.

  • The "Resources" section has many links to historical maps (some of them interactive), to general essays on the world of Jesus, and to interviews with New Testament scholars. Some of these are in audio format.

  • The "Scripture" section shows the text(s) for that class session.
